Coaching Vs. Therapy:

The distinction between therapy and coaching lies in its foundation or purpose. The therapy or medical model assumes the client needs healing or is “broken” at some level. According to the Medilexicon Medical Dictionary, psychotherapy is defined as “treatment of emotional, behavioral, personality and psychiatric disorders based primarily on verbal or nonverbal communication and interventions…”

Coaching focuses on developing strategies for dealing with the realities of the present and then evaluating the results. Coaching dwells in a world of neutral curiosity. How well did actions and choices support the stated goal? How did thoughts and attitudes affect results? What changes might be implemented? What resources can be employed or added? Each piece of data becomes another part of the solution. Coaching is a process of consistent re-evaluation without assigning fault. Instead, coaching focuses on determining effectiveness because that is the opportunity point for leveraging change.
